What is a Website Copy Audit?
A Website Copy Audit is the process of evaluating the written content of a website to identify areas of improvement in clarity, accuracy, relevance, and effectiveness. The goal is to ensure that your website copy aligns with your website’s purpose and is optimised to achieve these objectives, such as driving traffic, informing and nurturing your ideal clients, generating leads, or increasing sales.
During a website copy audit, I’ll review your website’s written content and assess its effectiveness in communicating with your target audience. I’ll also check the structure of a web page, such as headings, subheadings, images, tone of voice, messaging, readability, on-page SEO, call to action, internal and external links, and more.
A copywriting audit of your website helps you get top-level, professional advice before you take the plunge into a significant website copy overhaul.
Based on the audit findings, I may recommend revisions or updates to your website’s copy to improve its overall effectiveness and help you achieve your business goals. Suggestions can include rewriting or reorganising content, clarifying messaging, and optimising content for search engines. However, during the audit process, you may discover that you don’t need a major rewrite – just a few strategic copy tweaks here and there to achieve your website and business goals. You could even go ahead and do it yourself based on my recommendations!
After going through the Website Copy Audit process and receiving your report, you can then embark on a website copywriting refresh with confidence and clarity. Don’t let outdated or poor quality website copy hold you or your business back.
How Do I Know if I Need a Website Copywriting Audit?
- You’ve been meaning to update and revamp your current website copy for ages, but you don’t know where to start.
- Your current website is not bringing you the leads and sales you need. Your ideal clients are not connecting with your messaging and therefore not converting into paying clients.
- Your website is attracting the wrong clients – you need help!
- You’re losing customers to your competitors and you suspect your outdated website copy is to blame.
- You wrote your website copy to the best of your ability when you first started your business. But you know it could be better. So, you need a professional website copywriter to look at your website and suggest improvements.
- You’re happy to rewrite/update your copy for your business website, but you want to make sure you’re focusing on the right pages and content areas on your website.
- You’re considering using an experienced website copywriter to rewrite your website. But it’s a big investment and you want to check out their expertise and working style first before diving into a significant rewrite.
- You don’t currently have the budget for a complete website copy overhaul, but some overall direction and expert web copywriting advice would be much appreciated.
If these scenarios resonate with you, your business could benefit from a Website Copy Audit.
What Does A Website Copy Audit Involve?
Step 1
The Briefing Stage Before Your Audit
Before I start your audit, I’ll get you to fill out a questionnaire via email or over the phone so you can tell me your concerns or ask questions you have about your current website and its content. You can choose 3 or more website pages that you want me to focus on in detail. Sometimes all I need is to look at just a few pages on your website as often the issues you have with the copy on one page will be the same on other pages.
I’ll ask questions like: What do you want you website copy refresh to achieve? (more leads, more clients, etc.) Are there particular website pages you want advice about? (such as your home page, services, or about page.)
Your answers will let me know where to focus the audit. For example, if you want more leads, I’ll be looking at your target audience, how easy your website is to navigate, your use of reviews/testimonials throughout the website, how your messaging currently speaks to your ideal client, SEO, and more.
Step 2
The Website Copy Audit
This is the part where I get to work. I’ll check the overall structure of your website and then evaluate and comment on the specific website pages that you nominated in your briefing session.
I’ll consider things like: Do all the web pages make sense as a whole? Are they in the correct hierarchy? Do you need more or fewer pages? Does each page’s structure make sense? Are your headings compelling? Is your web copy readable and scannable? Is the page easy to navigate? Does the page provide enough information or too much? Does the copy suit your brand voice? Can any improvements be made to your content to connect better with your target audience? Does the call to action encourage action? Are there any info gaps or room for improvement? Are your services easy to understand and are they communicated in the best way? Is there anything you’re not doing that you could be doing to attract more clients to your website? Are there any major on-page SEO issues that could be hurting your website?
Step 3
Your Website Copy Audit Report
When I’ve done all my website copy checks, I’ll provide you with a detailed, actionable written report in PDF form within 10 days of our briefing session. The report will contain my observations and recommendations from a website copywriter, SEO copywriter, marketing specialist and editor point-of-view. As a copywriter, I worked in marketing for many years and managed the back end of many business websites. So, I can bring both a professional writing and technical eye to your website.
I’ll give you top-level SEO advice if that’s an area of your website that you require feedback on, but please note this is not an SEO audit – it’s a copy audit. So, I will be looking at SEO in relation to your copy.
While I will make many useful suggestions on how to improve your copy and the overall effectiveness of your website, I don’t rewrite your copy as part of this audit. The in-depth work comes if we work together as part of my website copywriting packages. But with this report you will receive plenty of tips and suggestions that you can implement yourself if you choose a DIY approach to refreshing your web copy.
